A true city of art, Perugia offers remarkable sights that go far beyond the usual Etruscan and medieval image generally known. Among others, it is worth mentioning a fascinating tour in search of those jewels of Baroque art that the city has preserved and almost hidden in churches, oratories and especially in its most important museum, the National Gallery of Umbria.
Such a wealth of works testifies to Perugia’s ability to keep pace with the artistic innovations that sweptItaly during the 1600s and express the character of an era of profound political and religious change.
Our itinerary can begin with a visit to that part of the Gallery devoted to Baroque painting: Pietro da Cortona, Francesco Mochi, Orazio Gentileschi, the Scaramuccia and the Carlone, to name a few of the great artists who were present in our city.
Also of great interest is a visit to the Church of Jesus with its frescoes and especially the rooms of the so-called lower church, three richly decorated underground oratories that are not normally accessible.
The tour can then continue with the Church of San Filippo Neri, a true summa of Perugia Baroque, whose facade has been restored to its original splendor by a massive restoration.
Also of great beauty is the Oratory of the Confraternity of the Disciplined with sumptuous decoration by Luigi Scaramuccia in the early 17th century.
