Lake Trasimeno, with its wide body of water enclosed between rolling hills, constitutes one of Umbria‘s most celebrated landscapes.
A guided itinerary allows visitors to discover evocative views of this landscape and to stop and learn about the ancient villages along its shores.
From Passignano, for example, it is possible to follow a route through Monte del Lago and San Feliciano to the pretty village of Panicale.
Or you can cross the lake by water to reach Isola Maggiore, at the center of the body of water.
Very impressive is the view from the boat: this town, with its medieval fortress, seems to rise directly above the water.
The Painters’ Lake
Pietro Vannucci, the famous Perugino, transformed the beloved and for him familiar image of the lake into a veritable icon. Each of his paintings reproduces the enchantment of those hills that fade into the blue and the serene, clear air on the wide surface of the water.
Even today, Lake Trasimeno retains intact that quiet beauty that so appealed to the great painters of the Renaissance.
It is a unique experience to find the landscape of the lake in nature during a tour and then to find it in the work of painters. Frescoes and paintings by Perugino depicting the lake are preserved in Città della Pieve, the birthplace of the famous painter, in Panicale and in Corciano.
