Assisi is in everyone’s memory and heart the city of St. Francis. Numerous and fundamental are the indelible reminders of his experience, not only in the most important buildings such as the Basilica dedicated to him, but also in the simpler hermitages and convents.

However, alongside the itinerary that retraces the path of the saint and searches for his legacy in the heart of medieval Assisi, it is possible to discover a unique archaeological route, often hidden in the very foundations of the city “visible” to the outside world.

Umbrian and Roman Assisi, so close to the Via Flaminia, was a scenic city, all set on giant terraces that form, even today, the base on which the splendid medieval town rests.

Such an itinerary is therefore an opportunity to rediscover important remnants of this older history with a guided tour that winds from theAmphitheater, incorporated in a characteristic medieval quarter that has preserved its elliptical shape, to the archaeological area of the Cathedral to that of the Roman Forum, hidden under the Town Hall Square and overlooked by the Temple of Minerva.

Finally, our “journey through time” descends into the foundations of two important buildings: the church of Santa Maria Maggiore and Palazzo Giampè, to discover two Roman Domus with perfectly preserved precious and rare Roman frescoes inside.

Precisely because it is so new, such a guided tour must be arranged a few days in advance to request the opening of some of the places to be visited.
