In a natural setting of rare beauty, Spello preserves the signs of a millennia-long history: its Umbrian origins, its full flowering in Roman times, the evolution of the medieval city, up to the great masterpieces of the Renaissance.

A guided tour of this beautiful city allows you to discover traces of this past: the gates and Augustan walls, Villa Fidelia and its archaeological secrets, but above all one of Pinturicchio‘s most beautiful works, the Bella Chapel.

  • Consular Gate, monumental entrance to the ancient Roman city.
  • Tega Chapel, with beautiful 15th-century frescoes.
  • Santa Maria Maggiore, one of the most important “places of art” in the region.
  • Baglioni Chapel, frescoes by Pinturicchio in Santa Maria Maggiore.
  • Church of St. Andrew, an impressive Franciscan church.
  • Porta Venere, with its towers is one of the symbolic images of the city.

For good walkers, the half-day itinerary may include:

In addition to the classic itinerary, it is possible to deepen the visit by including in the route a walk to discover the most beautiful views:

  • Arch of Augustus and medieval district of Posterula.
  • Porta dell’Arce with the splendid panoramic view towards Assisi.
  • Remains of the medieval Rocca Albornoziana (14th cent.).

Starting with the classic itinerary, which wanders through the streets and squares of the center, it is possible to create numerous tailor-made itineraries, perhaps including the small church of St. Claudius and a visit to Villa Fidelia, an 18th-century villa built on the site of an ancient Umbrian shrine much revered in antiquity.

A unique event, the Infiorata of Spello:

Corpus Christi, in Spello, is celebrated in a very special way: the streets and squares of the city are filled with the colors and scents of more than 1,500 meters of floral carpets, that is, real paintings composed with flower petals.

These extraordinary works take months to plan, but are carried out in a single night by teams of master flower arrangers who use only plant and floral elements for their work.

However, these ephemeral works are intended to last only the time of one morning, that is, waiting for the passage of the religious procession that will trample them.
