In Assisi, the frescoes inside the Basilica of St. Francis are undoubtedly the most intense and exciting part of the guided tour. For us guides, it is a pleasure to stay as long as you wish to delve into those pictorial cycles that constitute a true unicum of European art and history.
It will be the most wonderful opportunity for me to share studies, readings and reflections regarding the Basilica of St. Francis.
The course includes:
- Lower Church – pre-Giottesque fresco cycles in the nave, Chapel of St. Martin with frescoes by Simone Martini, the Chapel of Magdalene and the Chapel of St. Nicholas with frescoes by Giotto, right transept with a portrait of St. Francis by Cimabue, and the left transept with works by Lorenzetti;
- Tomb of St. Francis;
- Basilica treasury and cloister;
- Upper Church: fresco cycles by Cimabue and the Roman School and Stories of St. Francis attributed to Giotto.
The visit will be an opportunity to discover how the Franciscan message was revealed through images and how at the same time it was able to become the driving force behind the profound artistic renewal that characterized painting in the late 13th and early 14th centuries.
Add to this the importance of the presence in the Assisi “worksite” of artists from all over Europe who championed and shaped the social and cultural changes that characterized the West in one of its happiest moments.
From a practical point of view, I advise you not to come on Sundays or on a day considered a holiday, because then visits are prohibited.
Please feel free to contact us to arrange your visit to discover the best of Assisi.
