Positioned as it is on top of two hills, its historic center is so extensive that it seems, at times, to hide rather than reveal its remarkable artistic heritage.

As a tour guide for the region, but more importantly as an art and history enthusiast who has chosen to live in Perugia of all the cities inUmbria, I thought I would share with you some sightseeing ideas.

1. Discovering the “Perugia Underground”

A visit to the Rocca Paolina with its historical layers is not to be missed. This impressive fortress hides within it a real buried city that takes us back in time, from the Etruscan era-with Porta Marzia and the remains of the Ancient Walls-through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, to the Risorgimento period with Piazza Italia.

From here you can admire some of the most beautiful and celebrated views in Umbria, particularly toward the Umbrian Valley and Mount Subasio, with Assisi nestled on its slopes, and the Apennine foothills toward Gubbio.

2. A Classic Route – Walk between Corso Vannucci and the Acropolis.

Its having been a papal city and a center of political reference throughout its history has meant that Perugia’s urban and architectural imprint combines monumental character with elegance and refinement of detail. It is in this key that we can traverse and experience its “beating heart” with the Market Square and its elegant 15th-century architecture.

Continuing along Corso Vannucci and its noble residences, we arrive at Piazza IV Novembre with its most beautiful monuments: the Fontana Maggiore by Giovanni and Nicola Pisano, the Palazzo dei Priori, the Sala dei Notari, and the Cathedral of San Lorenzo.

3. Perugia – City of the Arts

The Perugia of the Renaissance holds the most beautiful surprises for art lovers. The National Gallery is the starting point for a journey that takes us on a discovery of some of the best-known works of art in Italy’s heritage.

It is worth mentioning Piero della Francesca’s “Polyptych of St. Anthony” and Beato Angelico’s “Guidalotti Polyptych” as examples of the city’s role in the 15th century. We then come to Perugino and his pupil Raphael. Don’t miss the Collegio del Cambio and the Chapel of San Severo.

4. The Perugia of the Villages

One only has to contemplate the view from one of the city’s many scenic overlooks to realize the breadth of Perugia’s historic center, which with its five “Borghi” allows as many must-see itineraries.

The ultimate limit of the city coincides with its medieval gates, which give names to the different neighborhoods. Among them, I highlight, for beauty and historical and artistic interest, the “Borgo Bello.”

Here are the Archaeological Museum, the Church of San Domenico and the Church of St. Peter, considered, due to the large number of masterpieces, to be one of the most important museums in Umbria, to which is added the monastery, now home to the Faculty of Agriculture.

Don’t miss the “Borgo Sant’Angelo” with the “Tempietto” and the “Borgo di Santa Susanna” with the magnificent monumental complex of San Francesco al Prato and the Oratory of San Bernardino with the attached Academy of Fine Arts.

Of course, this is just a start.
